My story "The Island Without Spice" is now out in Interzone issue 304

Image
The story is told from the perspective of a young mother living in a fictional island that's part of the historical "Spice Islands" in the 1600s. These islands were part of the Banda group of islands in what is now the Maluku province of Indonesia. She meets a Dutch alchemist who insists that the island where she's living has a secret ingredient for a cure-all medicine, though the locals insist that nothing unique grows there. This story is partially inspired by Amitav Ghosh's nonfiction work "The Nutmeg’s Curse Parables for a Planet in Crisis", which describes some of the Dutch history in Indoensia and the Banda massacre of 1621.
